The cold and rainy day in February, 2007, sure didn’t start as one that would end with a new idea for fun in the sun. Battling seven-foot swells, gusting winds, and driving rain in an old 28-ft cabin cruiser, returning from Catalina to Long Beach was more exhausting than inspiring.

But once Paul and Pam limped back into port, the sun came out, the temperature warmed, and there was still time for a friend to join them for wine, stories, and lounging on the deck in the festive marina atmosphere. Someone mentioned that the only thing left to cap off this glorious marina afternoon was the opportunity to soak their tired bones in a hot tub.

Everyone chuckled at the thought of owning a boat big enough to support a hot tub, but for Paul, the seed had been planted. Fueled by a born inventor’s curiosity (and maybe by the wine) his mind began turning over ideas for a marine hot tub. How could you take the large boat out of the equation? How would you ensure a supply of hot water? What if you could make a hot tub that floats in the cold ocean while you’re soaking in steamy hot water inside, and what if you could take it with you and set it up whenever, wherever you wanted? No way—would that be cool or what?!?!?

Within a month, Paul and Pam tested the first TugTub™ prototype, combining fishing pontoons, a PVC frame, and a thin thermal barrier. It was crude, but it held water, baby! It was apparent that a floating, portable hot tub was possible. A year of further product development, multiple prototypes, and many afternoons of boating, wine and dreaming later, the TugTub™ was completed and is now commercially available.

Paul’s invention savvy, Pam’s boating experience, and the couple’s collective creativity have combined to develop an outstanding, and fun, product. Paul and Pam can be found floating and soaking behind Paul’s power boat or Pam’s sailboat off Catalina Island or in the Long Beach Marina-- where the TugTub™ idea was born. They hope you enjoy the TugTub™ experience as much as they do. And if you’re in sunny Southern California, where TugTub™ is located, you can tie up with Paul and Pam (and your TugTub™) any time you want.

Environmental Stewardship:

The TugTub™ is an environmentally friendly hot tub. Electric consumption for the tub is only 40 watts. The tub requires less than 60 minutes of power consumption to heat to 250 gallons of water from 60° to 104°. Unlike regular hot tubs, no energy is wasted to keep the tub warm when it’s not being used.

The tub utilizes extremely efficient, environmentally friendly on-demand tank-less water heater technology.

One of the great environmental benefits of the tub is that it encourages boaters and waterside dwellers to be outside, enjoying and appreciating nature, rather than inside homes and boats, consuming additional power.

TugTub™ strives to have all of its packaging and paperwork made from recycled, post-consumer waste materials.

To have as little impact as possible on our marine life friends, we ask that all TugTub™ users allow their tub water to cool to ambient temperature prior to pumping tub water out into their lake, river, or ocean body.

Reality Check: TugTub™ components include various metals, paints, and neoprene. The mining, milling and production processes involved in fabricating these materials – and most man-made products – all have environmental impacts. In sourcing TugTub™’s components, we will continue to seek out corporate partners with strong environmental policies and positive employee health and wage policies.

TugTub™ donates 5% of its profits to marine protection organizations to help ensure that both the mammals and the fishes can all enjoy healthy “float and soak” water environments.
